| In the Faculty of Science and Engineering, composed of four courses of basic sciences, mechanical engineering, information technology and electronics, and Department of Biological Engineering, the philosophy is that "Science and engineering must be integrated". Students acquire expert knowledge in their chosen field. Moreover, students gain broad-ranging skills they can apply in related fields. It is our mission to develop students into talented individuals who are capable of organically understanding both engineering and science. |

| Department of Basic Sciences |
 |
Studies rooted in the three basic fields of physics, chemistry and biology serving to generate educational and research results from an interdisciplinary scientific perspective. |
| The curriculum focuses on the three fundamental fields of science and engineering - physics, chemistry and biology. Despite its name, the course covers more than just the basics. Students gain a broad base of knowledge through a thorough understanding of these core subject areas. This fundamental knowledge will open up opportunities in various fields. |
| [Main Research Areas] |
- Condensed matter physics associated with electronic and photon states in various materials
- Analytical and physical chemistry of organic and inorganic materials
- Macroscopic and microscopic biology, including ecological studies of animals and plants
|
 |
| Department of Mechanical Engineering |
 |
A broad-based educational and research curriculum spanning the basics of mechanical engineering to the latest nanotechnologies. |
| The Department emphasises modern mechanical engineering, and the fundamentals of mechanical engineering to students who wish to make valuable contributions in modern industry. Teaching programs in the Department consist of lectures, exercises and design and laboratory experience. These are programmed for enhancing the creative abilities of students, including dynamics of machines, fluid mechanics, energy conversion, robotics, computer aided engineering and other areas of engineering. In the final academic year every student has an opportunity to complete a graduate thesis in any laboratory. |
| [Main Research Areas] |
- Energy conversion, including heat transfer, drop-wise condensation and heat and fluid flow
- Dynamics of machines and machine design for stability
against vibration and tribology
- Mechatronics and intelligent robotics, laser processing
|
 |
| Department of Information Technology and Electronics |
 |
With many experts in information technology on staff, the department is helping to drive ahead the learning and science for an advanced IT society. |
Information technology (IT) and its associated electronics, particularly electronic materials and functional devices constitute main core areas of study in this department. Computer comprehension, covering its sciences and supporting technologies, is the main theme. By learning about the technologies and science behind information engineering, such as semiconductors, optoelectronics, magnetism and their device applications including multimedia and ultrasonic fields, students develop not only computerutility skills but also research skills in the associated fields. |
| [Main Research Areas] |
- Information science and technology: software, information processing and computer networks
- Electronic devices: functional devices, semiconductordevices and sensors
- Electronic materials: semiconductors, solar cells and nano-size magnetic materials
|
 |
| Department of Biological Engineering |
 |
Applied biology-based education and research with an emphasis on issues for environments and food resources, conducted in association with marine aquatic industry worksites. |
| The Department of Biological Engineering focuses on four major core areas: molecular and cellular biology, marine biology, aquatic ecological engineering and food sciences for healthy life. In the excellent natural surroundings of the Pacific Ocean, the Kitakami River and the Umakko Mountain, students learn fundamental principles of living organisms and their useful applications to production biology. Many students obtain either a food health administrator's license or a high school teacher's license, and some of them go on to enter a school of higher grade. |
| [Main Research Areas] |
- Molecular and cellular biology in eukaryotic organisms
- Production of marine organisms of coastal waters, oceans and deep-seas
- Remediation of aquatic environments.
- Nutrition chemistry and physiology of natural products for human health
